Privacy

What this site measures, what it sets on your device, and how to switch it off.

The short version

This is a portfolio. There is no account to create, no newsletter, no shop, and nothing here asks you for your name. The only things collected are anonymous traffic statistics, and the cookies that come with embedded video and posts from other sites.

What runs on this site

Everything below is either measuring traffic or drawing the page. Nothing on this list is used to build a profile of you, and none of it is sold.

  • Google AnalyticsGoogleAggregate traffic: pages viewed, rough location by country, device and browser. Sets _ga cookies.
  • Jetpack StatsAutomatticPage-view counts for this site. Part of WordPress.com hosting.
  • Adobe FontsAdobeLoads the typefaces the site is set in.
  • PhotonAutomatticServes the images from a CDN so pages load faster.
  • TikTok, InstagramTikTok, MetaOnly on pages with an embedded video or post. These set their own cookies when the embed loads.
  • Search ConsoleGoogleReports how the site appears in search. Runs no code here and sets no cookies.

Turning it off

This site honours Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track. If your browser or an extension sends either signal, analytics is switched off for you automatically and no _ga cookie is set. Nothing to click, and no banner in the way.

You can also block cookies for this domain in your browser settings, or install Google’s opt-out add-on. The site works exactly the same either way.

What is not here

No advertising pixels. No cross-site trackers. No fingerprinting. No data broker of any kind. Nothing collected here is sold or shared for advertising.

Case studies on this site sometimes embed archived copies of client pages. Those copies have had the client’s own marketing tags removed, so they do not track you either.

What this page already knows

Everything below is readable without asking you and without any permission prompt. Run it and see. Nothing is stored, logged or sent anywhere, including to me.

What to do about it

Most of that list cannot be switched off one item at a time, because none of it is a setting. It is the ordinary result of a browser drawing a page. What you can change is how much of it is distinctive, and who gets to collect it.

  • Use a browser that resists thisLargest single changeTor Browser makes everyone look alike on purpose, which is the only real defence against fingerprinting. Short of that, Firefox and Safari both blunt it, and Brave randomises several of those values on every visit.
  • Block the collectors, not the signalsEasyuBlock Origin stops most tracking scripts from ever running. That matters more than hiding any one value, since a signal nobody reads costs you nothing.
  • Do not rely on private windowsCommon mistakeA private window clears cookies and history when you close it. Everything under "your device" and "how it draws" reads exactly the same in one, so it does nothing against fingerprinting.
  • Know what a VPN doesNarrowIt changes the address at the top of that list and hides your browsing from your network provider. It changes nothing else, and you are trusting the VPN with what your provider used to see.
  • Turn off what you are not usingWorth doingThird-party cookies off, and location, camera, microphone and notifications set to ask rather than allow. Those are the permissions that give away the most and are wanted the least.

The honest summary: you cannot make yourself invisible on the web, and anyone selling that is overselling. You can make yourself ordinary, and you can cut down how many people are watching. Both are achievable and both help.
